Spring is my favorite season to teach! And what better way to kick off spring than with some spring freebies?! Keep reading to grab some fun spring math and literacy activities you can use right away in your classroom!
Spring is filled with warmer weather, flowers, and sunny days. In the classroom, we spend an entire week learning about flowers and plants. We dive deep into learning about what flowers need and how they grow. We read all the books we can to learn more about flowers.
To go along with all of our fun spring learning, I wanted to share some fun spring freebies that require almost no prep! Just print, add them to your math and literacy centers, and you are good to go for the week. All you need is some fun spring mini erasers or counters and you are all set. If you are anything like me, then you have a full stock of these lying around. And if not, no worries, I got you covered in the download with printable counters that can be used instead.
This free spring resource pack has 5 different activities that you can use in your math and literacy centers. They can be played independently or with a partner. These would also be great to use in your guided math or literacy groups! Students can use mini erasers or any other small manipulative for each activity in this pack. Ready to see them all? Let’s dive in.
Spring Freebies Activity #1 – Count and Cover
First up, Count and Cover Mats! These are some of my favorite activities in this pack because they are super simple for students to use independently. This makes them great for morning tubs, centers, and even my fast finishers in the group. To prep, all you need to do is print and preferably laminate the mats. I know it’s an extra step, but trust me – it’s so worth it! You’ll be able to use these over and over again.
You’ll also want to find some small manipulatives or mini erasers they can use to “cover” as they count. I like to use cute spring flowers mini-erasers for this.
When you’re ready to play, students will pick a mat and a set of small counters or manipulatives to use. They will look at each number on the mat and count out that many manipulatives to place in each box. I love to use mini erasers since you can fit quite a few of them in each box. This is a great activity for helping students work on one-to-one correspondence and counting.
Spring Freebies Activity #2 – Flower Ten Frame
In this hands-on math center, students will pick a ten-frame mat and a set of small counters. They will look at the number on the mat and using the counters, show that number on the ten frame.
I like to have my students use these mats while seated at a table with some of their friends. As they complete each one, they trade with someone at the table until they have completed all the mats for numbers 1-10. You might even consider having students trace the number on their mats with their fingers or dry-erase markers if you opt to laminate the mats.
For students who are ready for a challenge, you can ask them to figure out how many more are needed to make 10. They can also practice writing these simple equations on a whiteboard.
Spring Freebies Activity #3 – Flower Letters
Are you looking for a way to practice letter identification and letter formation with your students? If so, I know you’ll absolutely love this next activity! Flower Letters will help you target both uppercase and lowercase letters.
Students will name the letter and then build it on their mat. Before building, I have my kids trace the letter using proper formation. Then, they can use playdough or mini erasers to build the letter. I use mini erasers because they are smaller than most other manipulatives and fit better inside each letter. These are perfect for literacy centers and morning work since students can be fully independent!
You may even opt to extend this activity further by having students write the letter on their page a few times in a notebook before moving into a new letter mat.
Spring Freebies Activity #4 – Flower Addition
Help your students get a better understanding of addition concepts with these spring addition mats. To play, students will get the addition mat and a set of counters. They will roll a die cube and place that number of counters in the first flower pot. They will roll again and place that number of counters in the second flower pot. Students will then write an addition sentence to show how many counters they have.
These mats are one of my favorite math activities to use in small groups. They are so great for modeling equations and helping students understand how to add. You can use one mat with your whole group and allow students to write on dry-erase boards, or provide each child with a mat and set of counters to follow along. Either way, I know your kids will have fun with this one!

Spring Freebies Activity #5 – Flower Patterns
Help your students with making and identifying patterns with this spring patterning activity. Students will get a set of three different types of counters. Students will look at the type of pattern on the side of each row and use the counters to create that pattern.
This is great because they will get to practice AB, ABC, and ABB patterns. You can extend this activity further by having students draw each pattern on a piece of paper after building. Just make sure to provide plenty of crayons or markers so that students can add some color to their drawings!
