End of Year Kindergarten Review: What Students Need to Know Before 1st Grade

Have you ever hit the last few weeks of kindergarten and thought, “Wait… have we covered everything they actually need for first grade?” You’re juggling field trips, testing, behavior, and kids who suddenly have all the summer energy. It’s a lot. The good news is you don’t need to review everything. You just need to focus on the right skills in simple, consistent ways that still keep your students engaged. Come along to learn how!

Use these end of year kindergarten review actives to help students learn what they need to know before first grade.

The Key Skills to Focus on (and Why They Matter)

When it comes to kindergarten review, it’s all about strengthening the foundation. First grade teachers are counting on students to walk in with a solid understanding of these core skills.

Students can practice skills like addition within ten as part of their end of year review.

Students should be confident with letter recognition and letter sounds so they can continue building reading fluency. They also need to be able to blend sounds to read simple CVC words, along with recognizing common sight words.

In math, number recognition, subitizing to 10, and counting to 20 with one-to-one correspondence are essential building blocks. Students should also be able to count by rote to 100, even if it’s not perfectly consistent yet. On top of that, practicing addition and subtraction within 10 helps prepare them for more complex problem-solving in first grade.

When you keep your focus on these key areas, your review time becomes much more manageable and meaningful.

Simple Activities That Make Kindergarten Review Easy and Fun!

The goal this time of year is simple. Keep it engaging, keep it hands-on, and keep it consistent. Here are some of my favorite kindergarten review activities for these skills without adding more stress to your day.

Snap Cube Mats for Hands-On Review

If your students are feeling wiggly, this is the perfect place to start. These Summer Snap Cube Mats turn skill practice into something that feels like play.

Snap cube mats are great for reviewing math and literacy skills at the end of the year.

Students will use color-coded directions to build pictures with snap cubes while reviewing skills like letter recognition, beginning sounds, number recognition, and subitizing. As they build, they are actively thinking through each skill instead of just completing a worksheet.

To use these, simply give each student a mat and a set of snap cubes. Walk them through how to read the code on the side, then let them build independently or with a partner. This works really well during centers or morning tubs when you need something meaningful but low-prep.

Simple CVC and Sight Word Practice

You don’t need anything fancy to review CVC words and sight words, especially this time of year.

Write a familiar CVC word or sight word on the board. Students read the word, then write it on paper.

One of the easiest activities is a quick “Read and Build” routine. Write a familiar CVC word or sight word on the board. Students read the word, then build it using magnetic letters, whiteboards, or even just writing it on paper.

You can also turn this into a quick game by mixing in a few nonsense words and having students decide if it’s a real word or a silly word. This keeps them thinking while still reinforcing those foundational skills.

Counting Activities for Daily Review

Counting doesn’t have to feel repetitive. Mixing it up with different formats makes a big difference in keeping students engaged.

These counting activities can be used as a daily kindergarten review at the end of the year.

With these Summer Counting Activities, students can rotate through counting and graphing, tally marks, clip cards, and cut-and-paste activities. This gives them multiple ways to practice one-to-one correspondence and number sense without getting bored.

To use these, set up simple math tubs or centers. Give each group a different activity and rotate every 10 to 15 minutes. You can also pull these into small groups if you have students who need extra support.

Addition and Subtraction Partner Games

Make a Square is one of my favorite ways to review both addition and subtraction within 10 because it brings in a little friendly competition.

Make a square activities can be used as partner games to practice addition and subtraction.

Each set includes a variety of options for different skill levels and at least 40 pages, so you will have plenty to choose from.

To play, students take turns drawing lines to create boxes on the game board. When they complete a box, they have to solve the math problem inside. If they get it correct, they claim the box. If not, their partner has a chance to “steal” it.

To use this, pair students up and model one round together so they understand the expectations. Then let them play during centers or early finisher time. It keeps them engaged while still reinforcing important math skills.

Color by Code Worksheets for More Addition Practice

When it comes to reviewing addition within 10, sometimes simple is best. These Summer Color by Code Pages are perfect for reinforcing counting on in a way that keeps students focused.

Color by code is a fun and engaging kindergarten review activity for the end of the year.

Students look at the number combinations, solve the problem by counting on, and then color the space based on the code. As they work, a mystery picture slowly appears, which keeps them motivated to finish.

There are 16 pages included in two versions, and you also get answer keys for easy grading. You can use these during independent work time, as a math center, or even as a quiet activity after recess when everyone needs to reset for a few minutes.

Blending Sounds Small Group Games

Blending is one of those skills that really benefits from consistent, quick practice. These Small Group Games focus on blending sounds, making it easy to build that into your routine! Inside you’ll find tons of options, including:

Blending activities are perfect for end of year kindergarten review.

This bundle includes four different versions. You get options for 2 phonemes, 3 phonemes, and 4 phonemes, as well as compound words/syllables. Start with 2 or 3 phoneme words and build up as students gain confidence. These work great as a warm-up before reading groups or as a quick intervention activity!
