If your students are anything like mine, they thrive on hands-on learning. At this age, young learners need concrete tools they can touch, move, and manipulate to understand new concepts. Snap cubes to the rescue!! These are a favorite in my classroom because they make learning interactive, fun, and feel more like play.

Getting Started with Snap Cubes
Snap cubes are a fantastic tool for primary learners because they make abstract concepts tangible. Young students benefit from being able to see, touch, and manipulate objects while learning, and snap cubes allow them to build numbers, letters, words, and patterns in a hands-on way. They encourage exploration, creativity, fine motor skills development, and problem-solving while reinforcing important math and literacy skills. Yes, really!
Before diving in, take a few minutes to introduce the cubes and practice snapping and connecting them so students become familiar with the tool. This is a great activity for the first week of school, or whenever you plan on getting started with these fun manipulatives. Once your kiddos are snap cubes experts, the fun really begins! Here are five of my favorite ways to make learning with snap cubes engaging!
1. Math Manipulatives

Snap cubes are perfect for building number sense and supporting hands-on math. Use them to help students visualize addition, subtraction, and more! They can be simple activities such as sorting the cubes by colors and/or graphing to show which colors you have the most of. Students can also use snap cubes to measure and compare objects around the classroom. You can even have students build towers to represent numbers in math problems. This simple hands-on approach makes abstract concepts concrete, helping students see math in action.
Snap cubes are also great manipulatives for students to use when learning and practicing addition and subtraction. Younger students need something concrete to hold and manipulate when they are in the early stages of learning addition and subtraction concepts. Model addition by connecting two towers and counting the total cubes. Or, practice subtraction by removing cubes from a tower and counting what’s left. Use whiteboards, or pencils and paper to write out equations as you go!
2. Ten Frame Practice
Ten frames are a fantastic tool for helping students see numbers as parts of ten, boosting addition, subtraction, and mental math skills. Snap cubes make this practice even more interactive!
One of my kids’ favorite activities to do with snap cubes is Roll, Snap, and Frame. Students will roll the dice and use the code to match the colored snap cube to the mat. They will then fill in a square on the ten-frame or the graph. Students keep rolling and filling the mat until the picture is finished.
I have quite a few different options for this activity, including one that focuses on letter identification, as well as one that allows students to build seasonal pictures before they build out the tens frames.
3. Graphing with Snap Cubes
Looking to work on graphing instead of tens frames? I’ve got you covered! Graphing with snap cubes helps students practice sorting, counting, and interpreting data in a playful way. We love to use Roll, Snap & Graph Mats to practice this skill!
To play, students will roll the dice, match the cube color with what they rolled, place it on the mat, and then graph it on the included recording sheet. These are great for:
- math stations
- small groups
- morning work
- STEM bins
- early finisher tubs
Best of all, as they finish, a fun picture will be revealed! When they are done, you can have students count how many cubes of each color they needed to finish their picture.
4. Phonics Skills

Snap cubes aren’t just for math; they’re great for building letters, sounds, and words. Students can use the cubes and snap them to create letters, then put them together to build words. Another way we make words with our snap cubes is to write letters on each cube, then put the cubes together to build words. This makes it a fun, hands-on way for students to blend and manipulate words. Here are some fun activities to try:
- Write a letter on each snap cube and have students snap cubes together to form words, matching sounds to letters.
- Practice blending by moving cubes to create new words.
- Challenge students to spell sight words or short phonics-based words using cubes.
You can even combine math and phonics by counting how many cubes each word uses, adding an extra layer of learning.
5. Letter and Number Recognition
Snap cubes can also be a fun way to practice number recognition and counting. One activity that we love doing is to help practice number recognition, counting, and letter recognition are these Snap Cube Matching Mats. This resource focuses on the following skills:
- Letter Recognition
- Beginning Sound Recognition
- Number Recognition
- Subitizing Dot Patterns
For the math-focused mats, students will look at the code on the side and subitize or match the number to create the picture. The phonics version has students look at the code and match the uppercase/lowercase letter, or the letter for the beginning sound. Both options reveal a fun, seasonal picture when the matching mat is filled in. I love using these for morning tubs and centers because my kids can be fully independent, while working on important math and literacy skills!
Tips for Making the Most of Snap Cubes
When it comes to any manipulatives, keeping things organized is key! To keep snap cubes organized and easy to use, consider storing them in clear, labeled bins or small containers by color or size. Using a caddy or divided tray can make them easily accessible during centers, small-group instruction, or independent work, and labeling each section helps students quickly find what they need and clean up efficiently when the activity is over.
Learning with Snap Cubes is Fun!
Snap cubes are more than just a manipulative; they’re a versatile, engaging tool that can support both math and literacy in your primary classroom. From practicing addition and subtraction to building letters and words, snap cubes give students the concrete experience they need to understand new concepts. You can find all of the resources mentioned here, and so many more, in my TPT store!
